Why you can trust what I write here

I’m Al, and I started Infinity Junior Golf after one too many late nights searching for junior club sizing and tournament calendars and finding nothing useful.

I trained and taught high school mathematics and science, and I’m now at home with our two boys full time. They’re 17 and 12, and between them they’ve been through a decade of junior golf — group clinics, private coaching, club competitions, and on to state and national championships here in Australia.

We’re in Australia and I write for readers everywhere. In practice that means being careful about what actually transfers. Equipment advice, coaching principles and the parenting side travel perfectly well. Competitive pathways, scholarship systems and seasons do not, and where that’s true I say so rather than assuming your situation matches ours.

Let me be straightforward about what I’m not. I’m not a PGA professional, a certified instructor, a college coach or a club fitter. I don’t have a scratch handicap and our family swing is not a thing of beauty. Where a question genuinely needs a qualified coach — swing mechanics that aren’t working, a suspected injury, a serious recruitment decision — I’ll say so and point you to someone who is one.

What I bring instead is ten years of getting this wrong and occasionally right, twice over with two very different children. The five-year gap between them turned out to be the most useful thing about this site: I bought beginner equipment twice, years apart, for two boys of different sizes and temperaments, and what suited one was wrong for the other.

The first set I bought my eldest was too big, because someone told me he’d grow into it. That’s sensible advice for school shoes and no use at all for golf clubs. I couldn’t tell you the brand now. What I remember is a season of him fighting a club that was fighting back.

I also bring a teacher’s approach to research. In a science classroom you can’t hand-wave; a student asks why and you need an answer that holds. So when I write about whether a junior really needs a particular club, or what a tournament weekend actually costs, I find the primary source, check who funded the claim, and tell you where the evidence runs out.
